Kyla art show gives back to the community

Kyla Art Group’s 36th annual art show and sale sponsored by Kiwanis will take place Nov. 2 at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre in Prince Albert.  People will also be able to enjoy a wine and cheese social as part of the evening.

The proceeds from the wine, ticket sales, raffle and door prizes support many Kiwanis projects within the community such as the music festival, high school scholarships and a garage sale which helps sends kids to camp.

Karen Bell, board of directors for Kiwanis and chairperson for the art show said last year, just over $4,000 was raised and she hopes for a good turnout this year as well.

“The way that ticket sales are going this year, I’m sure we’ll have 500 people there,” she said.

There are 20 artists that will be showing their work, including three new artists.  Bell said there is no theme to the art and there will be a variety of pieces shown.

“All the paintings that are in this show this year have never been shown before.  There’s no repeat from last year at all,” she said. “These are all brand new paintings.”

Jack Jensen, a founding member of the Kyla art group will also be showing his art.  He said among the artists, there will be about 250 pieces in total.

“We always have a pretty excited viewing of the art,” he said. “It’s sort of a surprise to ourselves because we all paint or do our artwork individually in our own studios and then bring it to this show.”

He said the hanging of the art during the show is the first time all of the members see each other’s work.

“It is all new work to us and it’s all new work to the people attending the show,” he said. “It keeps the show very fresh.”  

Laverne Bourassa, a member of the Kyla art group encourages people should go to the event because it’s only on for one night.

“The beauty of the art itself is worth the price,” she said. “I don’t think people realize just how good the art is in this area that people present and it’s such a variety.”

Although Bourassa won’t be presenting any pieces of art this year, she is happy to be a part of it.

“I love to partake. I just love the evening of the show and seeing so many people and visiting with them,” she said.

The art show will be on Nov. 2 at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre and begins at 7 p.m.  Bourassa said people will not be disappointed with the event.

“Along with seeing the art and having great food to eat, you also get to see a great show and you’re also giving back to the community,” she said.
