Precautions taken after package left at Government House

Oct 30, 2014 | 12:38 PM

Staff at Government House in Regina took precautions when a package was left outside the main doors Thursday morning.

RCMP were notified by staff of a suspicious package that was discovered around 7:40 a.m.

The package itself was an empty pinata.

“It’s unusual because it’s not an object that is usually sitting in front of Government House,” said Elizabeth Popowich, spokesperson for the Regina Police Service (RPS).

“I would ask you to think about recent events, about world events, to think about, perhaps, people’s awareness about anything that seems out of place or unusual.”

Mounties were the first policing agency on scene as they normally respond to matters at Government House. Officers inspected the pinata before turning the investigation over to RPS, as the event took place within the city of Regina.

“We will do an investigation to determine who placed this package at Government House and why,” Popowich said.

There was never a threat to the public.
