Walking dead get charitable

It’ll be a night full of the walking dead and they’re coming to the streets of Prince Albert.

On Oct. 28 the second annual Family Futures Zombie Walk will take place.

Jolene Furi, prenatal outreach worker with Family Futures Inc., said after last year’s success they wanted to hold the event again.

“It’s fun.  It’s something to do fun for Halloween and as well we ask that people to bring donations for the food bank or for a baby and this year we’re also starting to collect financial donations at Christmas time we have families that don’t have anything, so we go around the community collecting as much as we can,” Furi said.

This year the Zombie Walk will be a little bit longer than the previous one, but Furi said it is basically the same.

Looking back she said the community reaction was “huge” and she expects the same.

“It was overwhelming actually.  I just did it quickly together and then I kind of got worried thinking nobody was going to show and we went there and it happened and there was so many people; it was amazing,” she said.

“And it wasn’t just the people that participated; the streets were lined with people watching us.”

Furi said she doesn’t know what the draw is to the event, but she suspects curiosity is a part of it.  With dozens of zombies showing up, one costume really stuck out.  Furi said there was a baby that a mother had dressed up as a zombie, which she described as ‘adorable.’

Those interested in taking part in the zombie walk should meet in the parking lot of Court of Queen’s Bench just before 6 p.m.  The walking dead will then head down Central Avenue onto Ninth Street and over to the Family Futures Inc. centre where there will be hot chocolate served.

“It’s family friendly.  We want people to come out and to have fun.  Dress up and walk through the streets, it’ll be fun,” she said.

Family Futures Inc. is a non-profit organization that supports women and young families in their community. 

“We do lots of outreach work, so we do home visiting and we give rides and all that kind of stuff for pregnant moms,” she said.
