RCMP working to prevent radicalization in Canada

Sep 26, 2014 | 3:01 PM

The ISIS threat has the RCMP rallying its officers to ward off extremism in Canada, including Saskatchewan. Offices are set up across the country where officers aim to team up with parents, teachers and other community members.

“We're dealing with individuals at risk, individuals that are going down the pathway of criminal behaviours,” said Sgt Renu Dash, RCMP director of public engagement. “So we're always looking to prevent those individuals from walking down that path and reroute them so they're going to become contributing Canadian citizens.”

The idea is to stop radicalization before it happens. The RCMP has had offices set up for several years that focus on crime prevention such as leading young people away from gangs or prostitution. Dash says countering violent extremism is now becoming part of the program.

The RCMP calls warding off violent extremism a “shared responsibility” among law enforcement and the wider community.
