COUNCIL PREVIEW: Hwy 55 repair agreement could be greenlighted

Sep 22, 2014 | 6:46 AM

Prince Albert’s city council is expected to approve a repair agreement with the province to repair the bridge on Highway 55.

Under the agreement the province would fully fund the cost of repairs to the bridge, which is located outside of Little Red River Park. The bridge was damaged by debris that collided with its piles due to high water flows last spring.

The full cost of the repairs is not yet known, but the province has set aside $150,000 for the project. The funding will come from the Urban Highway Connector Fund.

Council is also expected to review a report on the performance of concessions and vending at seven of the City’s venues. The report contained sales and expense results up to the beginning of September and found that profits for all venues combined is 51 per cent off of the full-year target.

Members of council are also expected to make a final decision on a revised three-year plan to provide spring ice for rentals at the Art Hauser Centre, Kinsmen Arena and the Dave G. Steuart Arena. The ice rentals would be offered at a rate $20 higher than during the regular season.

Council will also be taking a look at repairs to the log cabin at Kinsmen Ski Hill. The repairs will cost an estimated $17,000, and it would involve the replacement of the cedar shakes on the roof. Much of the shakes have been rotting, and the request is coming to council now to avoid damage from another winter.

The facilities department (within the department of community services) will be forwarding a request to be reviewed during the 2015 budget discussions to renovate and restore the log cabin.

Members of the Board of Police Commissioners could be restricted to two-year terms if council passes a new bylaw at Monday’s meeting. The bylaw would replace the current one that established the board, which allowed members to stay on for a four-year term.

The City will present the Award of Merit to The Prince Albert YWCA before the meeting begins. CEO Donna Brooks will be on hand to receive the award.

Mayor Greg Dionne is expected to make the following proclamations:

-National Family Week: Oct. 6 -12
-Homelessness Action Week: Oct. 12-18
-National Veterinary Technician Week: Oct. 12-18
-Breast Cancer Awareness Month: October
-Children’s Vision Month: October
