Man lucky to escape fire

Feb 28, 2011 | 11:13 AM

A garage fire north of Prince Albert Friday morning nearly cost a man his life.

It happened along the old Sturgeon Lake Highway 355.

Adam Harris, who is a driver for B and B Asphalt, stopped after seeing a lot of black smoke.

“So I ran into the yard, knocked on his door and told him that his garage was on fire.”

Together with the homeowner and two other people, they began trying to save what they could, Harris said.

The roof began to collapse with the homeowner trapped inside.

“We told him to get out of there and the whole roof collapsed on top of him and I thought I was watching a man die right in front of my eyes.”

The three other men did not waste time taking action.

“His son, I believe it was, and the other gentlemen kinda went in and helped him out. And I ran in behind them and grabbed him and put him in the snow. He had badly burned hands.”

As for being a hero, Harris said he is not.

“Not really a hero. I kinda think any good citizen would help out somebody.”

The man was treated in hospital for burns to his hands and face, before being released home.
