Highway 2 to be repaired no sooner than mid-summer

So far, Highway 2 is looking better than last year, but this may not last for long.

A washed-out area of highway by Northside could end up wreaking havoc.

Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure spokesman Doug Wakabayashi said they will be fixing it, but not right away.

“We had planned to replace the culvert there this construction season. So, right now we’re just finishing up the design and that should be tendered in the summer. And in the meantime, we’ll monitor it and make sure there’s no safety hazards,” said Wakabayashi.

So far, Wakabayashi said they don’t have an exact date of when the province will be going ahead.

“We plan to tender the contract this summer and then the exact start of construction will depend on contractor availability and things like that,” he said.

Wakabayshi said they are keeping an eye on the various current problems with the highways, but they are still in the planning stages for now with the Highway 2 project.
“We do need to replace it sooner rather than later, but these culvert replacements, it’s more than just ripping out dirt and putting in a pipe, there’s some design work and things like that that needs to be done as well,” said Wakabayashi.

Last year, a section of Highway 2 was flooded, and eventually detours had to be put into effect when the water went right over the road. This time around, a different set of problems may present themselves throughout the summer, as lake traffic begins to pick up.
