People pay respects on Mother’s Day in Memorial Gardens

People took in the fresh air and green grass of the Prince Albert Memorial Gardens as they came to pay respects to their mothers on Sunday afternoon.

The Gardens hosted an event, giving away flowers to be placed on the graves of loved ones.

“My parents are buried here in this cemetery,” said Margaret Ferchuck, an officiant who does prayer and funeral services for funeral homes in the city.

“Every Mother’s Day we come and pray at the grave,” she said. “We’ve been doing it for quite a few years now, because this is the way we’re able to come and share our time with our loved one,” she said.

Ferchuk’s mother, who was also named Margaret, was very important to her family, she said. Ferchuk’s favourite memories were of her “just being Mom” by doing things like getting them ready for school, cooking meals and washing clothes.

“She was very loving, kind and compassionate. She was everything really,” said Ferchuk. “She was our life. She was the head of the household … besides Dad, but she brought up 10 of us.”

There were seven brothers and three sisters in Ferchuk’s family, she explained.

“Back then … there were always big families. Today, not so: you have smaller families today,” said Ferchuk.

On special days like these, it’s important to take the opportunity to come and share your love with your loved one, she said.

“It’s kind of like a thank you. Showing that she loved us and we’re showing our love back, in a sense – not that we didn’t show it when we were being brought up, but even now, just … a loving way, in remembrance.”
