Construction underway on Red River Roping and Riding Club arena

Construction is underway at the Red River Roping and Riding Club arena.

Facility manager Michelle Hofstra said the indoor riding arena will be 80-by-175 feet and is Phase 1 of a three-phase plan.

“The foundation is all done, it’s just putting the steel up and that would be, the shell, will be finished and we’ll put electricity in it and gas,” Hofstra said.
The club is hoping construction will be completed within two months, but it all depends on the weather. She said they have already been delayed because of the harsh winter.

“We have three phases that we want to fundraise for, so it’s not going to end at say $80,000 or $100,000. Once we get this building, we want to be able to buy the second building and then fundraise to get the second building and then fundraise to get the second building up,” she said.

“And then fundraise for Phase 3, which will be to converting the first building into a hall, commercial kitchen, offices.”

One of the fundraisers being hosted by the club is an all-night ride. The event on May 3 will include several activities and is open to anyone who has taken pledges.

A large portion of the roof collapsed somewhere between Feb. 9 and 10, 2013, after a large accumulation of snow had built up on the structure. It later had to be demolished.

Last May, board members estimated they will still have to raise nearly $600,000 – on top of the insurance money to build a new arena that at least allows for riding space.

Hofstra said they are currently running “business as usual” and will hold their summer camp this year.
