UPDATE: Telemiracle 38 raises $5,285,744

Telemiracle is a tradition among many in Saskatoon, but for one family, the connection has spanned generations.

Lacey Hickson’s family took to the stage today to present a $425,000 donation courtesy of Hickson’s great aunt and uncle.

Hickson said Elmer and Doris Kohlmann spent the better part of their lives as the primary care givers to their daughter, Linda, who was born with cerebral palsy.

“Their life was their farm (near Rabbit Lake) and their daughter,” Hickson said, adding her aunt was an avid supporter of Telemiracle for many years.

When Doris, still the primary care giver, passed away in 2011, at the age of 94, the will stipulated the couple’s entire estate go to their daughter’s care. When Linda passed away in 2013, the remainder of the estate was left to Telemiracle.

Hickson herself has a personal connection to Telemiracle as well. When her youngest daughter Kendall was born four years ago, she was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect. At 13-weeks old, Kendall had to undergo surgery in Edmonton.

The family’s cardiologist suggested they apply for Telemiracle funding so they could stay close to their daughter during the surgery and recovery.

“Being away from out daughter was hard but to have the money be an issue too would have been really hard,” Hickson said.
Since then, Hickson continues to stay involved with Telemiracle, having answered the phones for the past two Saskatoon Telemiracles.

“My auntie Dories love that fact that Kendall received funding. She’d been giving for years to Telemiracle and they’d planned this in their will to leave their estate to Telemiracle so when someone from our family got to benefit from it, it was a huge deal to her,” Hickson said.

“It’s not only a great story for our family but I also think it’s a testament to what Telemiracle does.”
