UPDATE: New housing project to begin in West Flat

Feb 26, 2014 | 2:12 PM

The ground has broken on four new affordable homes in Prince Albert.

On Wednesday, city officials, along with the province met at 1249-15th Street West where a two-storey four-plex will be built by P.A. Community Housing Society Inc. (PACHSI).

The new homes were made possible with assistance of the Government of Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), which is providing $340,000 from the provincial Summit Action Fund (SAF) to help build the homes.

“Increasing housing supply in Prince Albert is a goal that we share with Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc.,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude in a statement.

“Most importantly, we are working together to build a better life for all Saskatchewan people, which is what the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth is all about. I am also pleased that this type of project may be replicated on other infill lots to increase accessibility of affordable housing in Prince Albert.”

Mayor Greg Dionne said the development aligns with the goals of council and its efforts to help the housing mix in the city.

“Healthy cities need housing options for all income levels and this will ensure that more families in our city have access to a safe, quality place to live,” Dionne said in the release.

Each unit will be around 1,050 square feet over two floors and contain two bedrooms and will be constructed on a concrete slab with no basement.

PACHSI manager Linda Boyer said this project aims to fill vacant lots in the city and better use the existing infrastructure.

“We kind of gearing it towards single parents or couples with one child because it’s so difficult affordable housing in Prince Albert,” Boyer said.

The PACHSI currently has about 300 people on their waiting list with many of them needing these smaller units, so applications have already been submitted..

“Construction will start as soon as this cold snap is over, so we expect by the end of next week and it should be completed by the end of September.”
