New funding for forest fire protection

Oct 13, 2010 | 5:03 PM

This year more than 1.7 million hectares of provincial forest succumbed to flames, most of them in the north.
The federal and provincial governments are hoping to reduce the number of forest fires in Northern Saskatchewan next year by providing more money help build fire breaks in four communities.
The extra $200,000 puts their shared total investment at nearly $2.1 million.
Ten northern communities have already benefitted from fire breaks.
Fire breaks are wide strips of land where the vegetation has been permanently reduced. They act as a barrier to stop oncoming wildfires.
Prince Albert Grand Council is partnering with the Ministry of Environment to hire, train and monitor the fire crews.
