Ice conditions mean major changes to Canadian Challenge race

Feb 3, 2014 | 11:45 AM

The starting line for this year’s Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race will move back to Prince Albert’s Central Avenue, due to favourable ice conditions on the North Saskatchewan River.

But, according to organizers, poor ice conditions have meant that crews could not install a trail north of La Ronge.

The 12-dog race teams will have to turn around in La Ronge and race back south, ending at Elk Ridge Resort.

The trail has also been affected by trees that have been blown over by strong winds this winter – crews have had to clear the fallen trees. There is also deep slush affecting the lake portions of the race.
