STC subsidy falls for the first time in almost a decade

Jan 21, 2014 | 11:17 AM

The government subsidy for the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) for 2014 has been approved, decreasing slightly from the sum given the year before.

STC will be receiving an operating grant of $10.3 million and a capital grant of $3.3 million, down from $10.5 million and $3.5 million, respectively, the year before.

“It's not (the goal) to reduce the subsidy…but we can't see the increase, I don't think, like we have over the last ten years,” said Don McMorris, minister responsible for STC.

In the last year, STC has discontinued routes with low ridership as part of an effort to reduce costs. McMorris gave staff and management credit for their work, but pointed out there is still more work left to do.

“What we need to do is continue to advertise to try and get customers to think of STC on the courier side and also on the passenger side, to increase the numbers so we're not reliant on a subsidy into the future.”

McMorris said work has already been done to make the service more attractive, like modernizing STC's buses with WI-FI and making the fleet more accessible to wheelchairs. He hopes to see the service continue to be provided while making sure as much taxpayer money goes to high-priority issues as possible.
