Teacher found not criminally responsible for relationship

A former Shell Lake teacher has been found not criminally responsible for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy in 2008.

That ruling came less than an hour after Michelle Francouer's trial began Friday morning in Saskatoon.

Francouer sat calmly in court, dressed in a black sweater and black pants.

She broke into tears and hugged several family members after the judge ruled that she was not criminally responsible.

Francouer was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and several psychiatrists determined she lacked the capacity to know what she did was wrong.

She said nothing to reporters outside court.

“Pleased with the final result…clearly the correct result based on the medical evidence we heard,” said Aaron Fox, her lawyer.

Francouer was granted an absolute discharge.

Court heard that her mental condition is now being controlled by effective medications.
