UPDATED/PHOTOS: St. Louis Bridge closed, traffic rerouted

Jan 3, 2014 | 1:02 PM

A crack in the St. Louis Bridge has led to the arterial connection on Highway 2 to be closed today.

Les Rancourt, Mayor of the Village of St. Louis said he was informed by the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure that a structural investigation needs to be completed before it can be re-opened.

“(They) said that the bridge is closed until further notice until they get a bridge inspector to come out and do a structural assessment,” said Rancourt. “They said they should have further information next week.”

Doug Wakabayashi with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructures said part of their road crew noticed the damage to the road.

“Our staff noticed a crack going across the driving surface of the bridge,” said Wakabayashi. “We've had bridge engineers that have taken a look at it and they've determined a more thorough inspection needs to be done to determine the cause of the crack and that for safety the bridge should be closed at least until that inspection occurs.”

Wakabayashi said the bridge will more than likely be closed until late next week.

Northbound traffic will be rerouted to Highway 3 and Highway 25 and southbound traffic will be rerouted to Highway 25 and Highway 3.

We will have more information as it becomes available to our newsroom.
