Raiders speak out against bullying at East Central School

Dec 10, 2013 | 4:00 PM

Bullying happens every seven seconds in Canada and the effects on a child that is bullied can be long lived.

Prince Albert Raiders defenseman, Mackenzie Johnston and the Prince Albert Police Service spoke to the students of East Central School about the effects of bullying and how to stop it.

“One out of every 10 students who drop out of school, drop out because of repeat bullying,” said Johnston.

This is why Johnston said the team will continue to speak at anti-bullying events in schools.

“Even if we affect a few kids at every school I mean that’s awesome.”

Johnston said the key to anti-bullying is baby steps.

“Just trying to prevent as much as we can is the ultimate goal, we don’t know how far we can take it.”

Inspirational words came from students at East Central School, after the anti-bullying presentation.

“Look them in the face and stay stop,” said Grade 6 student Emma Hazelhood.

Hazelhood also wants anyone being bullied to know they are not alone.

The event ended how it does every year… in a giant game of dodge ball where the city police and the Raiders took on the Grade 4 to 8 students.
