Prince Albert Forest Management Area meetings to be held

Nov 8, 2013 | 6:45 AM

The company that oversees the Prince Albert Forest Management Area is seeking public input in a series of meetings set to be held over the next month.

At the meetings, Sakaw Askiy will be looking at the five-year operational plan for harvest and reforestation operations. The discussions will also include an update on the 20-year Forest Management Planning process. The meetings are open to shareholders and the public.

Sakaw Askiy general manager Dave Knight said he has been hearing a lot of positive feedback from the shareholders. “The mills are looking forward to getting back in the black and reinvesting in facilities and getting the Saskatchewan forestry industry back to where it was 10 years ago.”

The meetings will begin on Nov. 18 at the Little Red River First Nation band office. Later on that day, there will be a meeting in Big River at the Big River Community Centre.

Two meetings will be held on Nov. 20, in the District of Lakeland office, followed by one at Mezzanine Arena in Montreal Lake. On Nov. 21, there will be meetings in Hall Lake and Weyakwin, and on Nov. 22, there will be a meeting in Candle Lake.

The final public meeting will be held in Prince Albert on Dec. 10 at the Prince Albert Travelodge.

Knight said that right now, there’s optimism in the industry.

“It started the Big River sawmill, the ramp up of NorSask in Meadow Lake, ramp up of Edgewood in Carrot River, and hopefully some good news around Paper Excellence facility in Prince Albert…”

He said he’s hoping the Prince Albert pulp mill will move forward in the next 12 to 18 months.

“All I know is that they’re working hard to put a package together that meets their economic interests and meets the interests of … the people who are going to be providing fibre to that new facility.”
