Michael Martin is living proof of what six months of dedication and hard work can accomplish.

He recently competed at the World Powerlifting Championships in Hungary, where he won two gold medals.

He also now owns a world record, through deadlifting 600 pounds.

“I was totally surprised when they yelled out I was doing a world record. I can't really remember what the number was, but it was fun,” said Martin.

To qualify for the world championships, Martin had to first place at a competition in Calgary last May.

“So ever since May we were going pretty hard to get ourselves ready for it……5 to 6 days a week…..a couple hours a day in the gym.”

This was not Martin's first time at a major competition. He competed last year in Slovakia.

“The set up was quite different. You had to go up ramps, and it was a lot smaller venue. You had to get your first lifts in for every category or you were done.”

Next year's championships will be held in Argentina. Martin said he is hoping to compete.
