Warman stabbing suspect unlikely to face adult sentence

Sep 17, 2013 | 5:24 PM

A boy accused of stabbing of a 13-year-old Warman girl is unlikely to face an adult sentence if he's convicted.

The boy, also 13 years old, made his second appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court Tuesday morning. He's charged with attempted murder after Warman RCMP found the girl suffering from multiple stab wounds around 10 p.m. Friday night.

Crown Prosecutor John Knox said a number of factors are weighed when trying to figure out if a youth should be tried as an adult.

“It depends on the age of the accused, the seriousness of the charges, the suitability of a youth sentence to appropriately consequence the accused — those sorts of things,” he said to reporters out front of the courthouse.

Knox said based on his review of Canada's Criminal Code, the boy's case would probably not meet the criteria for an adult sentence if he is found guilty.

The boy is being held in custody until his next court date Thursday morning. At that time, court will review a judicial interim release report being put together on the boy to determine if he'll be granted bail ahead of his trial.

“It's a very standard report that will look at options for release,” said Knox. “It looks at a number of things including family support, residency. 'Where's he going to go to school?' 'What other issues are happening?' It just gives us a picture.”
