Tenants suing well-known Saskatoon landlord

Jul 23, 2013 | 6:54 AM

Saskatoon landlord Jack Grover is being sued after a fire at one of his buildings.

The fire on Avenue D North killed one person in January of 2012.

Now, Daniel Shepherdson's executor and five tenants are suing Grover for damages of more than $1.5 million.

In a court document, they allege Grover removed batteries from smoke detectors and did not get rid of garbage and debris from the building efficiently.

They also say he did not provide basement tenants with a kitchen – instead giving them hot plates.

The tenants allege they brought forward concerns about the building before the fire happened.

In an exclusive interview with News Talk Radio shortly after the house fire in 2012, Grover said he also lived in the building and only had time to grab his keys as he walked out.

“Now I am out of my own house because I can't go back there. I was left with a few clothes on,” he said.

At that time, Grover said Daniel Shepherdson, who died in the fire, lived in an upstairs suite next to his, and had rented from him for several years.

“I wanted to go back. I couldn't go back inside. Smoke was there, from the basement,” explained Grover in the January interview.

“I like to help as many people as I can, but then something bad happens. What are you going to do if people don't look after their own place?”

Grover has more than 100 tickets or convictions with fire and building inspectors.

He spent a year in jail after he was convicted of trying to alter smoke detector inspection records after a rental property he owned on Avenue E north caught fire, killing three-year-old Isabelle Bowron and her nine-month-old sister Jordynn.
