PA police temporarily withhold names in officer-involved shooting

Jul 22, 2013 | 5:13 PM

Prince Albert Police are still tight-lipped about the name of a man shot by police two weeks ago.

Last week paNOW independently confirmed the identity of the 27-year-old who was shot by the two officers as Ryan Natomagan-Nelson of Prince Albert.

The July 9 shooting occurred after police responded to two related domestic calls and were allegedly confronted by a knife-wielding man.

Despite public comment from those who knew Natomagan-Nelson, Sergeant Curtis Halcro said police will not confirm the name until family gives the go-ahead.

“I spoke with the family representative this [Monday] morning and our administration has made the point with the family that we will not release the names,” said Halcro. “They’re still requesting that it not be made official from the police. So we’re respecting that request. The name will come out eventually and most likely we will be confirming the name.”

However, the family has been informed of some details of the investigation.

The name of the man shot is not the only thing being kept under wraps during Prince Albert police’s investigation, which is being overseen by an independent police observer.

The names of the two officers, their years of service, and further details on what happened that evening will not be released until the investigation progresses, said Halcro.

As of Monday, statements from critical witnesses had been collected by investigators. They will now review the statements. They are still waiting on some forensic reports and the report from the Office of the Coroner.

The officers involved are on paid leave.

Aggravated assault sends one man to hospital

One man is recovering from a Saturday morning fight that resulted in 50 stitches in his face.

At 2:24 a.m. police responded to a report of a disturbance between a small group of people. The male victim had a large gash in his cheek that he said was caused when a woman struck him in the face with a broken beer bottle.

The 27-year-old woman left the 15th St and 10th Avenue East altercation in a vehicle, but was stopped by police shortly after. She was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Young teen and child stabbing incident

According to an 11-year-old girl, there was no reason why she was stabbed by a 13-year-old early on Saturday evening. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for a small stab wound to her abdomen and let go later.

Police found the boy at his home and took him into custody. He was charged with assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public. He will appear in Provincial Court on July 31.
