Handful of High River residents ignore evacuation orders and stand by their homes

Not everyone tried to keep themselves dry when the evacuation orders came down in Alberta last week.

Some people like Jeff Kaiman from High River stuck around to try and save his family's home. He says he took a ride to the downtown area the other day.

“It's unbelievable,” he admitted.

“There’s boats that have washed clean across a main road and pushed themselves into a house, after the berm itself broke down from water rushing.”

He said he and a few others have been keeping an eye on each other’s' homes; helping to keep generators running and making sure they are safe.

Speaking on the Sarah Mills Show on Monday; Kaiman says they couldn't save every one. There is a house near him which left a skillet on when they left.

“They re-energized the power and I think it was around five o clock; their house went up in flames,” he said.

“The skillet overheated and their house was a complete loss.”

Kaiman says today, the water levels aren't so bad. He says it has receded quite a bit; but that it was just a few days ago he saw cars floating nearby his home.

The evacuation order in High River is still under effect.
