Mann Art Gallery to host golf tournament fundraiser

May 26, 2013 | 12:04 PM

Prince Albert’s Mann Art Gallery is in the process of acquiring a 6 ft. tall, 9 ft. long bronze wolf which will be created by Saskatchewan’s internationally acclaimed sculptor Joe Fafard.

April Sutherland, registrar at the gallery said they’ve been able to raise $44,000 with the ultimate goal of raising $150,000.

“Mr. Fafard gave us an amazing deal on the wolf, he’s charging us $100,000 but then we have to have the taxes, we have to of course have a plaque with the names of sponsors. We’re going to try to make that a modern piece of art as well,” Sutherland said.

The Mann Art Gallery will be hosting a golf tournament fundraiser on July 6th at Mark’s Nine Golf and Country Club, which is located in Red Wing, just outside of Prince Albert.

“It’s in the pines, it’s quite pretty out there,” Sutherland said.

Sutherland said the cost will be $75 for nine holes of golf and a steak dinner.

There will be 11 hampers to be given away as prizes and Sutherland said they even have a Chevy Cruz from Mann Motors as a prize for the first hole-in-one.

“Local potter and artist Gail Carlson will be making us some goblets, big enough to hold a beer, and they will have a wolf decal on them. Those will be the main prize for everyone, we’re going to have about 11 prizes,” said Sutherland.

The first tee off time is at 9 a.m. with the last tee off time at 3 p.m.

Sutherland said anyone interested in registering for the golf tournament can contact the Mann Art Gallery or visit Mark’s Nine.

She said there is even an opportunity for businesses or individuals to sponsor each of the nine holes for $100, and anyone interested can contact Sutherland at the gallery at 306-763-7080.

Sutherland said that once the wolf gets to the gallery they will be holding a great ceremony to welcome the statue, which would feature kids’ activities, a barbeque, some entertainment and much more.

She also said the gallery is debating holding an old fashioned picnic on the river bank but because of the magnitude of work it would require the event is still under consideration.

“We would have to find a major sponsor for [the picnic] but we thought it would be fun. Literally the old fashion picnic with three legged races and tug-a-war and all those kinds of things,” Sutherland said.

She went on to say that the $44,000 raised has come from every aspect of Prince Albert.

“One thing that I think deserves a mention, we’ve raised the $44,000 and that has come from every aspect of Prince Albert. I’ve seen kids that go to the school at Margo Fournier come in for an art class and throw a quarter into the donation jar and that’s all they’ve got. Malcolm Jenkins has been wonderful, we had a high end event, he volunteered to be our auctioneer and then he matched what everybody raised, we were just stunned,” Sutherland explained.
