Saskatoon Galaxy cinemas undergoing VIP-area expansion

May 24, 2013 | 7:12 AM

For film buffs 19 years of age or older, the movie theatre experience will never be the same.

On May 23, Cineplex Entertainment announced it will be expanding the current Galaxy cinemas in downtown Saskatoon, making room for three VIP auditoriums and a VIP lounge for drinks before and after the show.

Pat Marshall with Cineplex said the three new auditoriums will have more comfortable seats as well as food and drink service right in the theatre before the show.

“They will be 150 seats overall, larger seats, reclining seats and much more luxurious than traditional auditorium seats. There will be side tables and we will provide seat-side services so you can order food and beverages from the comfort of your own seat,” said Marshall.

Beginning later this year, the Galaxy location in downtown Saskatoon on Second Avenue between 19th and 20th Street will see an additional 12,500 square feet added to house the new VIP sections.

“We also have a licensed lounge area we'll be opening at the same time where people can enjoy before or after the movie because people like to talk about the movie experience after the movie so the lounge is a great place to do that,” said Marshall, adding both new areas will be exclusive to adults, no children or infants allowed.

The new experience won't come cheaply. Marshall said although there's no set price for Saskatoon yet, generally the ticket price will be around $6 or $7 on top of the regular movie ticket price.

In seven VIP locations across Canada including locations including Toronto and Winnipeg, Marshall said the increased price hasn't proven to be a deterrent as many of the VIP auditoriums sell out long before the normal cinemas.

Shovels are expected to be in the ground this year with opening day planned for next year.

Although there are no plans for a Regina expansion, Marshall said Cineplex is still considering more locations across Canada.
