Roughriders introduce Greg Marshall as new head coach

Jan 5, 2011 | 1:24 PM

Greg Marshall is excited to be a head coach in the CFL, but is more excited about the opportunity to be head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“I feel very blessed for this opportunity. Thank the good Lord for blessing myself with this opportunity to come back here and be part of Rider Nation,” said Marshall.

Marshall said the Roughrider organization's values matches his own. Number one, he believes in treating the players and other in the organization with respect. He looks forward to the excitement of coming out of the tunnel on game day.

Former head coach and current vice-president of football operations, Ken Miller, said Marshall has the qualities the team was looking for — an excellent football coach, a coach of excellent character, a coach who wanted to and could fit into Rider nation, and a coach with reputation of being a players' coach.

Brendan Taman, general manager of the Roughriders, said Marshall comes with a vast knowledge of the league and its players. He is impressed with Marshall's experience and knowledge of the game, saying he is always a play ahead of what's happening on the field.

Marshall was asked when assistant coaches would be in place. He replied that the process would start right Wednesday afternoon.

The search for a new team leader began after another Grey Cup loss late last year. Coach Ken Miller insisted after that loss that he wouldn't be returning for another kick at the can, though he has decided to stay on as vice-president of football operations.

Marshall is a former defensive co-ordinator with the Riders, spending six years with the team. He most recently held that position with the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
