Sask. florists busy before Mother’s Day

May 10, 2013 | 12:45 PM

Florists in Saskatchewan are blooming with business this week.

“I would say it's our single busiest week of the year,” said Quinn Brown, one of the owner's of Quinn and Kim's Grower Direct in Saskatoon.

“Valentine's Day is a busy week too, but you really get slammed all in one day at Valentine's. Mother's Day just progressively gets busier and busier as the week moves on,” he said.

Brown grew up on a farm and compared this week for flower shops to the equivalent of harvest week for a farmer.

“When it was combining season or whatever, you would go all night or do whatever you had to do to get it done and that's the kind of pressure we're under right now,” he said.

Brown is working long hours preparing for those buying their flowers a couple days early, to those who wait until the last minute.

He said the guys coming into his store aren't spending quite as much on mom as they do on their sweethearts.

“I think at Valentine's Day, I do see guys spending a little bit more. It might be guys buying for their girlfriends and stuff, so they'll spend a little bit more money it seems like,” Brown laughed.
