Local First Nations struggle with flooding

May 9, 2013 | 6:52 AM

Water continues to threaten the main access road at James Smith Cree Nation, north of Kinistino.

Residents have been sandbagging and hauling truckloads of gravel to keep the water at bay.

“It affects a large number of the homes,” said Colin King with Government Relations.

He added though that the band is getting lots of support.

“Local officials are working with neighbouring communities and trying to determine what may be feasible to help with that particular threat they are facing,” said King.

There is a similar situation at Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation. A number of roads there are also affected by flooding. King said the situation remains dire.

“Lake levels there are not expected to decrease for some time. It's a bit of a basin area so they may be responding for some time,” said King.

A number of homes on the reserve are threatened by flood water. Band members have been busy sandbagging and building trenches.

The story earlier stated the quotes were from Patrick Boyle with WSA during a flooding conference on Tuesday, but it was, in fact, Colin King who was speaking.
