SHARE receives $5,000 grant

The SHARE (Self Help and Recreation Education) program in Prince Albert is one of six recipients of a $5,000 grant.

At the end of April the Association of Saskatchewan Realtors granted the non-profit health care organization with the money as part of their Quality of Life in Saskatchewan initiative, which is donated to an establishment that meets set of standards to improve a community’s quality of life, explained CEO Bill Madder.

“I think their engagement with the community and their work with challenged individuals … and their engagement to bring those folks back into the community and of course their engagement with the real estate community as well; they put up their signs and they do a lot of work with maintenance on some properties,” Madder said.

SHARE, located at 1750-Sixth Avenue West, offers residential pre-vocational programs with persons suffering from severe and persistent mental health and dual-diagnosis issues.

They were one of 26 applications to apply for the grant.

“We were very happy, as well as surprised,” said executive director Robin Knudsen about being chosen. “We felt it was very fitting for us since we do do a lot of work for the real estate companies here in PA.”

The Legacy Grant also asks the programs to use the money for a specific project, as opposed to administrative costs, and Knudsen knows exactly what they will use the money for.

“With the funding we’re going to be renovating our kitchen and dining area for the clients. A lot of them stay here for dinner, so we needed a place where they can have fridges, a stove, microwave and also some new countertops and stuff like that we can use for them,” Knudsen said.

The program that services around 50 clients a day is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and will kick-off the celebration this June with their Share a Smile campaign.

Knudsen hopes their services will be more known in the community with the celebration and fund.

“For the people we have here this provides them an opportunity to learn a little bit about recreation, learn a little bit about working, a bit about themselves and just educating them in general about the community that we live in,” he said.

“We’re here and we’re trying to be more of a presence in PA.”
