May 8, 2013 | 10:09 AM

Former Minto Matt Anholt will lead the BCHL's West Kelowna Warriors on to the ice next season.

The co-rookie of the year with the Warriors this past season has been named captain, a challenge he is ready to accept.

“It’s a real honour to be named the Captain of the Warriors,” says Anholt. “Especially following in the footsteps of Max French is something special. I feel like we’re going to have a real strong team again next year, with a great group of returning players. I would like to thank Rylan, and the entire Warriors organization, for giving me this opportunity.”

Anholt scored nine goals and 22 assists in 51 games in 2012-13, with another three goals and four assists in 10 playoff games.

Coach and GM Rylan Ferster says Anholt brings a lot more that his stats to the job as captain.

“Matt will be a great person to lead the team,” said Ferster. “He demonstrated a lot of leadership qualities this past year. Also, being around the very good leadership group we had this past season will be helpful. Matt is a team first guy that shows up every night.”

Ferster who is also from Prince Albert, has recruited graduating Minto forwards Kylar Hope and Adam Osczevski as well as goalie Tanner Burghardt for the 2013-14 season.
