Woman accused of 2nd-degree murder granted bail

A Wahpeton Dakota First Nation woman facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of a pedestrian in a collision was granted bail in a Queen’s Bench Court room Tuesday.

Valerie Standing, 26, also faces charges of impaired operation of a vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of vehicle causing death and death caused by criminal negligence.

As part of her bail conditions as set out by Justice J. A. Ryan-Froslie, Standing will have to submit to electronic monitoring, stay at her Prince Albert residence 24 hours a day unless she has written permission of her probation officer or designate.

She is also not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs, unless prescribed by a doctor and cannot enter a place that sells alcohol. Standing also is not allowed to operate a motor vehicle or possess firearms or ammunition.

As well, Standing must participate in addiction, anger management programs and personal counselling for grief and loss.

Standing is also not allowed to contact a number of witnesses connected to the case or go to the Wahpeton Dakota First Nation unless given permission by the chief and council and her probation officer.

Details of the hearing are protected under a publication ban.

The charges stem from an early morning incident on the Wahpeton Dakota First Nation April 10, where RCMP officers and paramedics attended to the scene of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, 28-year-old Brant Fox died at the scene.

The two were in a relationship together.

Standing’s next court appearance will be May 22 at Prince Albert Provincial Court.
