Ice Wolves land SJHL MVP in Wakaluk

The La Ronge Ice Wolves announced Wednesday they have added the reigning Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League MVP to their roster.

Goaltender Alex Wakaluk, 19, won the SJHL MVP award this spring after posting a .930 save percentage and 2.32 goals against average with the Melville Millionaires. He also led them to the league semifinal series, losing to the eventual league champion Yorkton Terriers.

The Ice Wolves made a trade with the Millionaires at the deadline last season, sending two 20-year-olds in Brennan Ritchie and PA-native Nathan Boyer to Melville for Rhett Kehoe, Kade Kehoe and future considerations. Wakaluk turned out to be that player to be named later from the Melville side.

Wakaluk, a 19-year-old from Bellevue, Alberta, ranked second in save percentage and led the Millionaires to the league semifinals. He’s up for the CJHL MVP, which will be announced May 11.
