New PA roller derby team preps for league game

Apr 15, 2013 | 6:28 AM

They’re a team of ladies and if you step on their rink they’ll knock you over.

NorSask is the newest and second roller derby team to hit Prince Albert in the amateur sport, which has gained much popularity in Western Canada.

The team was first created when members from the original Prince Albert team, the PA Outlaws split off from the league.

“There’s two leagues, specifically why it started it’s hard to say,” said Colette Kadziolka of NorSask. “I think both leagues wanted the exact same thing, but different ways of achieving it.”

The team was first created in December of 2011, but has yet to play a sanctioned game, which will be near the end of April.

Sanctioning is when a team registers with the Roller Derby Association of Canada (RDAC) and submit all of their game stats to the association, during the end of each quarter, whether they’ve competed against other registered RDAC teams or not.

Team rosters must also be submitted within 15 days of the start of a quarter.

“I would say we’ve been preparing really hard since the start of the league,” said Kadziolka. “We’ve always wanted to push ourselves and be the best we can. We’re always going to watch other teams play other games, looking on the computer finding all these different skills we can work on and achieve.”

She said training is a large part of what their team is about.

Girls on the team often choose special team names that are a play off their own names and personalities.

“My name is Sockeye,” said Kadziolka with a smile. “Everyone has their own little personality, and it [can be] a play on their own name or kind of their personality.”

She added they’ve added five new girls recently to the team who are already showing a lot of strength in playing.

Kadziolka places a lot of her thanks to organizations like the Northern Lights Casino, Prime Mechanical and Jiffy Lube, which have supported the team from the start.

NorSask will hit the rink for their first sanctioned game April 27 at the Dave G. Steuart Arena at 7 p.m. where they’ll be facing the Saskatoon Killa’ Bees.

There will be a rookie scrimmage at 5 p.m. allowing any girls, in the surrounding regions, who have qualified under benchmarking to come and play a game before the main event.
