Sports stories of 2010, #1 Raider hockey celebrates 40 years

Dec 31, 2010 | 6:13 AM

On Dec. 11, the Prince Albert Raiders franchise recognized their past by celebrating the 40th anniversary of their first game.

The Raiders beat the Regina Pat Blues on December 12, 1971. It was the first game played at the rink that's since been renamed the Art Hauser Centre.

Players from the Centennial and Memorial cup teams were honoured. Legendary Coach Terry Simpson was also on hand.

Alumni Brad Bennett carried the 1985 Memorial cup to center ice.

“It's an honour to be able to carry this back out onto Raider ice again,” Bennet said.

Captain and Coach Peter Anholt had the privilege of carrying the Centennial Cup to center ice. He said the evening was about reconnecting with his old comrades.

“It was fantastic. I played here for three years, we had really good teams … and I made friends for the rest of my life,” he said.

The Raiders wore special commemorative jerseys which were later auctioned off for over $16,000 — after they beat the Everett Silvertips 5-1.
