PA Skating Club holding Disney-themed ice show

The Prince Albert Skating Club is showcasing their skaters at The Magic of Disney Ice Show at the Art Hauser Centre later today.

About 150 kids and teens will take to the ice for what show coordinator Roberta Sinclair says will be an exciting afternoon. “It’s got really good entertainment value … anyone who likes a show on the ice can come and have fun,” she said.

“We try to have fun songs for the kids and the audience to really get into the show,” she continued. This year, performances will be paired with well-known Disney songs like “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and “Be our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast.

Sixteen-year-old Kellie Miller, who will be performing in a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed act, prefers shows like this one over competitions, “I like these types of shows because you get more creative freedom … I think it’s really exciting because I get to play with the crowd instead of focusing on my program, I get to make them excited about skating,” she said.

With so many skaters on the ice and so many choreographed moves, the show was not easy to put together, said Kassidy Macintyre,14. “It’s a lot of time and a lot of work … it can get pretty frustrating but then at the end it’s good because the outcome you get is pretty good,” she said.

Miller and Macintyre are both in the skating club’s Star Skate level, which focuses on high-level figure skating skills. However, the club has three other levels, Preschool, Canskate and Power Skating, which are meant for younger skaters or kids with less skating experience.

Skaters from all four levels will be represented in the show, including the kids from Power Skating which focusses on building fundamentals for any type of skating. They will be performing in a Mighty Ducks-themed routine, “it’s choreographed for them to be like hockey players, so they go out there and skate their hardest and then they do a power stop … they do a choreographed maneuver but its hockey based,” said Sinclair.

At the show, their will be a raffle with prizes from local sponsors and other items for sale with proceeds going to the Skating Club, which is a volunteer organization.

Tickets are available at the door and cost five dollars per person while children under 12 are free. The show starts at 2 p.m.
