Fair weather puts Pineview Terrace construction back on track

The past month of favourable weather combined with the lack of recent snowfall has put the construction of the new Pineview Terrace Lodge back on track.

The care home is expected to open its door by this time next year, said John Piggott vice-president of operations for the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.

“In those first few months it was very wet and I think that slowed them down, but I think that the majority of that time has been made back and things are going well,” Piggott said.

The $24-million project broke ground May 4, 2012, which will add an additional 25 beds for the facility.

“We’ve got foundations and concrete in, virtually the majority of the concrete has all been poured … one house has been totally enclosed and the interior work is ongoing and they’ve also recently poured the tunnel to the hospital,” he said. “There’s still a fair bit to go, so we’re not finished this year.”

The new facility will replace the current care home that was built in 1964 with five houses for 12 residents in each.

Piggott said this facility is highly anticipated as it will be more modern, containing more rooms, space and washrooms with showers in each. One thing he is particularly looking forward to is the tracking hoists in each room, which will assist the moving of immobile residents.

“It’s built right into the ceiling … and then you attach a hoist type system and then you assist the resident get in and out of bed and you certainly can assist with moving the resident about and that will be tremendous both for the resident and the safety of the staff,” he explained, adding there is considerably risk to staff when they have to move the residents.

It’s currently unclear what will happen to the old Pineview Terrace Lodge once residents move into the new location.

“It is something taken in conjunction with the Ministry [of Health] over the next year, so we’re hoping to have something lined up prior to the move of the existing residents from the existing Pineview to the new Pineview.”

The new facility is located northwest of the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert.
