Sports stories of 2010, #4 Ice Wolves improbable playoff run

The La Ronge Ice Wolves’ made it to the Royal Bank Cup, after an improbabe playoff run.

A fourth place finish during the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League regular season meant a first round playoff matchup against the defending league champion Humboldt Broncos.

The Ice Wolves swept the Bauer Conference survivor series in three games, setting the stage for the next round against the regular season champion Flin Flon Bombers.

Playoff fever started to build when the Ice Wolves had a chance to wrap up the series in game six at the Mel Hegland Uniplex and the home side responded with a victory.

A split of the first two games of the conference final in the Battlefords opened the door and the Ice Wolves burst through eliminating the Stars earning a date in the league final against Yorkton.

The Ice Wolves would clinch its first SJHL championship with a thrilling overtime win on the road in game six and vaulted the Ice Wolves into the Royal Bank Cup.

Although they would bow to the host Dauphin Kings in the semi-final, the Ice Wolves gave La Ronge hockey fans a playoff run to remember.

The fans made memories of their own by throwing fish on to the ice every time the Wolves scored. It was a symbolic jester to “feed the Wolves”.
