Local Salvation Army taking unwanted pennies

Feb 26, 2013 | 4:01 PM

The Salvation Army in Prince Albert wants your unwanted pennies, and it’s going towards a good cause.

“All the pennies that would be collected here in Prince Albert will go for the local funding of everything we do,” said office manager MaryAnne Carter.

Across the country, The Salvation Army will be collecting unwanted discontinued pennies. The coins raised through its Penny Drive will go towards shelter, food and other programs and services.

The money donated to the Prince Albert location will go towards the operation of its breakfast programs, running the thrift store and seniors outreach, Carter said.

But a fundraising target has yet to be determined.

“I haven’t set a top figure because I know there’s lots of pennies in Prince Albert just laying around,” she said.

The Salvation Army is inviting donations of wrapped or unwrapped pennies. Donors in Prince Albert can bring their pennies to the thrift shop location at 900 Central Avenue, and the money will be forwarded to the office.

But if you’re looking to make a bigger – non-penny – donation, you can. They’ll issue a receipt for donations over $10.
