PA schools earn trip to We Day in Saskatoon

Feb 26, 2013 | 11:21 AM

Students from local schools will travel to Saskatoon for Saskatchewan’s first We Day, a youth empowerment event being held at the Credit Union Centre on Wednesday.

Groups of students from Carlton Comprehensive High School and Arthur Pechey School will hear speakers including Martin Sheen and Mia Farrow discuss the importance of community service.

Students from Red Wing School will also attend the event.

Tickets for this event couldn’t be bought – they had to be earned by demonstrating a commitment to local and international charity work.

The Student Leadership Council at Arthur Pechey was instrumental in raising the profile of charity events amongst the student body at the school.

“They did the poster creating and the awareness campaign in the school … putting announcements on the intercom every morning to make sure that kids knew what event was going on and where they could do their drop-off,” said vice-principal Roy Feschuk.

The school had always participated in local community events like the Terry Fox Run and the poppy celebration for veteran’s affairs, said Feschuk. However, to be considered they also had to become involved with international charities.

So, the students decided to support two initiatives. The first was We Create Change, a program in which pennies were collected and donated to Free the Children’s year-long water initiative. The students at Arthur Pechey raised enough money to provide 25 people with fresh water for the rest of their lives.

The second initiative was Free the Children’s We Are Love Campaign. The ongoing Valentine’s Day event is raising money for the Adopt-a-village campaign.

The 15 members of the Student Leadership Council will be accompanied by four other students who wrote essays stating why they should be attending We Day.

The free event is being hosted by Free the Children, an international charity and educational organization. About 15,000 students from across the province are expected to attend.
