Business of the Day: Gray’s Funeral Chapel

Feb 25, 2013 | 6:42 AM

Gray’s Funeral Chapel in Prince Albert first opened its doors in 1993.

Drew Gray, owner and operator of Gray’s, said it was his father, the pharmacist, who started the business and had hired him to manage the chapel.

“Our family has been in business in PA since 1936. It started with my grandfather with PA Electric Service, which remained in the family until about 10 or so years ago. The second generation of our family, my dad started his retail pharmacy in 1969 and then I started the funeral home business here in ‘93,” Drew said.

Since it’s been in Prince Albert since 1936 the Grays were honored with the Samuel McLeod Legacy Award.

“It was a tremendous honour. My grandfather was still with us at the time, he’s since passed away, but it was a tremendous honour for him especially because he was able to reflect back on his years in business and being able to pay it forward,” said Drew.

Gray’s Funeral Chapel offers a complete range of funeral services, with both burial and cremation options, and they take the time to suggest ideas and explain all the choices available for patrons.

Drew said they will soon be able to offer cremation services on their premises through Alkaline Hydrolysis, a new technology in funeral services for cremation.

When asked how it felt to be a part of a legacy and to now be able to offer new services at the chapel, Drew said it was a really great feeling.

“It just shows that the community is behind us. Now that I have 20 years of my own business to look back on, it’s only through the people patronizing us and calling upon us when they need it to [that we’re] able to expand and offer a more complete range of services right on site,” said Drew.

2013 does mark the 20th anniversary of Gray’s Funeral Chapel and Drew and his staff are in discussions about what they want to do for their 20th anniversary this year.
