SIAST implements state of the art emergency system

Feb 20, 2013 | 5:35 AM

SIAST campuses across the province have implemented a new system that will allow them to communicate urgent messages in emergency situations.

The emergency notification system will allow officials to deliver messages in a variety of ways to students and staff who are either on or off campus.

They can now contact people through SIAST email, cell phones, text messages, the public address system, alarms and alert beacons.

Director of the Kelsey campus in Saskatoon Gerry Bonsal said work on the notification system began four years ago.

“It kind of started with the Virginia Tech situation and our president said ‘where do we sit as a post-secondary institution with being able to effectively communicate to our employees and our students in the event of an emergency.”

One important aspect of the system means that if students or staff on the campus wireless network, they will immediately be notified if an emergency situation is happening.

“If they’re tied into the SIAST network, working on their emails or using any of the SIAST servers, it will pre-empt anything they are doing with a warning message saying ‘this is what the emergency is, this what you need to do’,” said Bonsal.

SIAST has invested $500,000 in the emergency system.
