Roughriders re-sign Tyron Brackenridge, sign Dwight Anderson

Feb 15, 2013 | 3:44 PM

The first day of CFL free agency was a busy one for the Roughriders.

After speculation for most of the day, the team announced late Friday afternoon they've re-signed linebacker Tyron Brackenrige, and signed defensive back Dwight Anderson.

While Brackenridge was the Riders defensive player of the year nominee in 2012, having played in all 18 games, registering a team leading 77 tackles along the way.

That being said, it's the Anderson signing that is bound to raise some eyebrows around Saskatchewan.

You'll probably remember when Anderson took a shot at Weston Dresslers eye, or perhaps twisted his ankle. There was also that time Darian Durant took a run at him in the West Final. So there's certainly some history between Anderson and some of the Riders.

That being said, he is a former two CFL All-Star, which he achieved under the watch of head coach Corey Chamblin when he was defensive backs coach in Calgary.

Anderson played with the Montreal Alouettes last season; he's also played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

It wasn't all positive for Riders management on Friday. Just minutes after the free agent deadline passed the Edmonton Eskimos announced they signed defensive end Odell Willis. With that signing, the Riders don't owe the Winnipeg Blue Bombers another third round draft pick.

Former first overall draft pick, linebacker Shomari Williams also signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Riders now have two remaining free agents; receiver Jordan Sisco, and offensive lineman Alex Krausnick-Groh.
