Business of the day: Gene’s Sports Excellence

Jan 30, 2013 | 6:08 AM

Gene’s Sports Excellence has been supplying sporting goods to the people of Prince Albert and the surrounding area for 41 years.

The family-owned business was started by Gene Kapacila. “It basically started with saw sharpening and skate sharpening, then he bought a bunch of used skates and it just kind of grew from there,” said Gene’s son Dave Kapacila.

The shop is a go-to destination for everything from sportswear to equipment for any sport. But the store’s seasonal specialties are hockey in the winter and cycling in the summer. “We are known as one of the premier hockey shops in Saskatchewan,” said Dave.

Any level of hockey player can find what they need at Gene’s. Whether you are looking for high-end gear or a bargain, they will have an option for a hockey player of any age.

Gene’s isn’t limited to just hockey, it carries cross-country skis, baseball/softball equipment, athletic clothing, lacrosse and other sports gear at their 48 – 10th Street East location.

As a family business, the staff at Gene’s gives it an advantage over other sports stores in Prince Albert. “We’ve got a stake in the business so we want to make sure the customers are looked after,” said Dave Kapacila.

If you are looking for sporting goods, it’s a good time to head down to Gene’s. The store’s biggest sale of the year is on right now.

Some of the deals include: 50 per cent off all clothing, 30 per cent off all hockey gear including skates, snowboard clearance and reduced prices on jackets.
