Business of the Day: BTR Financial Planning

Jan 24, 2013 | 6:34 AM

BTR Financial Planning in Prince Albert has been serving the City for more than 20 years.

In May 1992, certified financial planner Bryan Rindal and his wife Deanna opened BTR Financial.

The goal of BTR is to have a client who is relaxed, reassured and responsible for their future.

Rindal and his staff believe in building wealth through the financial planning process by offering products like chequeing accounts, mortgages, GICs, mutual fund and stocks, for example.

The staff at BTR takes the time to meet with their clients one-on-one to create a plan that is best suited for them.

“This can get complicated because it’s very intrinsic, but the bottom line is as a financial planning firm for us the plan is the absolute most important part of the whole package. Now, with any financial plan there are going to be investment products that go along with it, and for the bulk of financial planners that’s how they get paid is through the actual product they deliver,” Rindal said.
“But for us the product is secondary, the plan is first. Once you got the plan in place the products take care of themselves.”

Rindal explained that in the past many institutions would sell their products telling their clients these products would solve their needs without talking about a plan or strategy.

“What we do is we just sort of turned that thing upside down. We spend more time trying to get to know [our clients], what are their goals and objectives, what are their philosophies and values and then strategies start coming out from those discussions. Then the product just kind of fills the need for whatever strategies and options we come up with,” Rindal said.

“We really emphasize and stress the importance of the plan and planning pace and that’s what we do and that’s what I wanted to be when I grew up, a financial planner and now I’m here,” said Rindal.

Rindal got his first mutual funds license in 1986 and began working with a company who ended up filing for bankruptcy in 1987.

Rindal said following that was the stock market crash in Oct. 1987.

“My first 15 to 18 months in the industry were anything but stellar,” Rindal said chuckling.

“You learn from your experience and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and of the guys that went through all of that, I think there’s only one guy left in the industry, besides myself, in Saskatoon that went through all of that.”
He said it’s an industry of learning.
