Rain and snow creates problems on Saskatchewan roads

Jan 16, 2013 | 6:50 AM

Rain, snow and freezing temperatures are not mixing well with roads, leading to poor driving conditions across southern Saskatchewan Wednesday.

On Tuesday, temperatures went from minus 20 degrees in the morning to plus three in the late afternoon and back down below freezing at night. Now, temperatures are expected to drop below minus 10 on Wednesday.

Roads in the city are slick underneath that layer of snow, but city crews are out plowing and sanding.

Meanwhile outside cities the Highway Hotline map is showing winter driving conditions for most of southern Saskatchewan this morning with icy, slippery sections.

A text from Allan at 306-306 says Highway 11 from Regina to Saskatoon is slick as of 6:00 a.m. The passing lane is covered with light snow which spills over into the slow lane in places and it’s slippery everywhere.

“Plan for a slower commute this morning, take your time, don't pass, and avoid ending up in the ditch,” he wrote in.

RCMP are advising people not to travel on Highway 1 around Indian Head. The area has snow covering glare ice with poor visibility and as of 4:00 a.m. some traffic was pulled over and stopped due to the bad road conditions.

Regina Police and RCMP didn’t report too many problems on the roads overnight.

However parts of Highway 1 and 11 were closed at different times on Tuesday when trailers jackknifed across the entire road.
