Raiders cool Canes in Lethbridge

Oct 9, 2012 | 11:45 PM

The Raiders completed the sweep of their four game Central Division road trip in Lethbridge. The 4-1 win also runs their win streak to seven and means the Raiders have points in all eight of their games in 2012-13.

However they fell behind 1-0 just 21 seconds into the game when Russell Maxwell jammed in his own rebound at the side of the net. The Raiders recovered and outshot the Hurricanes 12-8 in the first period but couldn't beat overage goalie Ty Rimmer until early in te second period.

Mike Winther swept in a Dakota Conroy centreing pass in the Dallas Stars draft choice's first game back from a four game injury hiatus. The Raiders went ahead for good on their only power play of the night. Rimmer was penalized for shooting the puck directly over the glass before Sawyer Lange slammed a slapshot into the top corner from the right point at 4:22 of the middle frame.

Carson Perreaux had momentarily increased the lead to 3-1 when referee Derek Zalaski ruled Perreaux's slapshot went in under the crossbar. However video review revealed the shot went off the post where it meets the crossbar.

The scored remained 2-1 until early in the third when Riley Guenther converted a Reid Gardiner shot when the rookie's stick broke sending the puck across the crease.

The Hurricanes pressed late in the third period but the Raiders weathered the storm. Mark McNeill put the game on ice with :50 left when he buried an Anthony Bardero feed into an empty net.

Bardero assisted on three goals and was named first star as the Raiders outshot Lethbridge 35-20 while killing off all three Hurricane power plays. Luke Siemens made 19 saves to record his 6th win of the season.

The seven game win streak is the longest since 1999 with the Raiders hosting Portland Friday as the Winterhawks make their first visit in two years.

All Raider games can be heard on 900 CKBI.
