Graig Newman shaving his head for cancer awareness

Things are a little hairy with the Roughriders this year, and not just because of their play in the fourth quarter the last couple of games.

There's a number of players on this years edition of the team with a lot hair on their heads. There's the nearly identical twins of Efrem Hill and Taj Smith, but there's also the Canadian “hair” force of Sam Hurl and Graig Newman.

“It's just a funny joke we got going around the locker room,” said Newman. “Maybe Pantene Pro-V or Head and Shoulders might sponsor us.”

The hair may be noticeable, but the jokes are being made in a positive way because of their play so far. Hurl is tied for the lead league in special teams tackles, and the cover team as a whole is keeping the leagues best returners from breaking one.

“It might be the opposite way,” joked Hurl if things weren't going well. “They might be making fun of us.”

While the team is having a lot of fun with the teams luscious locks, Newman plans to do some good with his hair in the off season.

“Both of my grandparents passed away from cancer,” said Newman, who nearly lost his best friend to the disease as well, but thankfully he's doing just fine now.

So with that in mind, Newman is planing to shave his head for cancer research and awareness in either October or November.

“It's just awareness, eventually it's going to impact you,” said Newman.
