Heat wave to Rain

Jul 16, 2012 | 12:01 PM

After a week of 30 plus weather, Prince Albert finally saw some rain.

John Paul Cragg, a warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada said over a 24 hour period the city saw about 30 millimeters of rain.

“For Prince Albert we might clear up a little bit but Wednesday it’s going to get dark again, probably see some rain. Thursday it might clear up again but Friday might see some rain again, or at least a chance of rain. It’s going to be a cloudy, rainy week,” Cragg said.

Cragg was unsure of how much rain the city could see this week because it’s dependent on convective storms.

“Right now it doesn’t look like too much but there could be some convective storms. There are a couple of low pressure systems that will be coming through. There could be convective storms and in these storms the precipitation is very localized. So you have a thunderstorm that can drop 50 or 80 millimeters of rain, whereas 15 kilometers to the north or to the south of that storm they could see nothing. So it could be really dependent on the types of storms that pass over and whether it’s convective through thunderstorms or not,” said Cragg.

The forecast for the next month is showing above average normal temperatures for this time of year.

“The seasonal forecast, it’s not always perfect, but it is showing a signal that’s above normal temperatures for this time of year. We could see temperatures into the 30’s again, it is summer and it will fluctuate,” said Cragg.

In Prince Albert from 1971 to 2000 the city averaged five point five days that were above 30 degrees.

Cragg said we should expect to see more temperatures that reach the 30’s in the next month.
