Goodbye Spring … Hello Summer!

Jun 20, 2012 | 12:04 PM

As we turn the page over to summer, we can look back on what was a very wet spring.

Nearly 176mm. of precipitation fell in the Prince Albert area–that included both rain and snow.

“You normally would see 121mm. so probably about 45 per cent more precipitation than you would typically get in the spring,” said Senior Climatologist David Phillips.

He said temperatures were close to normal but it may have seemed cooler because of the overcast conditions and excess moisture.

“The problem is you had lots of days with rain. It wasn't as if you had Texas gully washers that were flooding you out but there were a lot, lots of days with rain,” said Phillips.

The first 12 days of June had rain on them, and it rained for more than half of May.

The Lloydminster and Yorkton areas were even worse off. They had nearly twice as much rain as we did.

“We'll just have to wait and see how the summer unfolds, Precipitation is always a tougher thing to get right but we think it will be a warmer than normal summer,” said Phillips.

Looking ahead to the next week, Phillips said there is only sunshine and highs in the 20’s in the forecast for the Prince Albert area.
