Prince Albert host MNLA

Metis leaders from across Saskatchewan will gather in Prince Albert this weekend.

The Metis Nation Legislative Assembly and Annual General Meeting is taking place. The main order of business will be setting an election date.

A planned election last month was cancelled because some members of the Provincial Metis Council shunned earlier meetings. That meant there was no quorum.

“The sooner we get this election over with the better. That's my main concern,” said Melfort Local President Marshall St.Dennis.

He said he is not aware of what the internal issues are about, but adds he is not told much anyway.

“We're kind of treated like mushrooms, fed crap and kept in the dark. Until we actually meet someone down in Saskatoon and have a meeting, then we are told what's going on,” he said.

Sources have said there may be an internal disagreement between the “old boys club” and the younger leaders over constitutional changes.

“There's some squabbling going on. I don't really know too much about that because it's more or less over in that part of the country around Saskatoon, and North Battleford,” said Hudson Local President Don Sawatzky.

He said he too is looking forward to having the election date set.

The Assembly runs all day Saturday at the Travelodge.
